Dive into Black Brilliance!

Did you know that there are Black scientists in marine science who have made extraordinary contributions, but their stories are often untold? It's black history month, and we sought to change that! In this blog, the black voices of marine science will be celebrated, and we aim to shine a spotlight on these ocean heroes.

Why Black History Month Matters in Science

While this company is focused on Marine science, we should all know how important it is to celebrate Black brilliance. Historically, this field has a severe lack of diversity, with African Americans only making up a shameful 3%, and this is because they have faced numerous barriers to entry and advancement. Black History Month allows us to:

  • Shine a spotlight on these deserving role models: Seeing them thrive in a field that lacks diversity is an inspiration to the next generation, breaking these limiting stereotypes and showing that they belong in these spaces.

  • It fixes the historical narrative: Unfortunately, it is too common to overlook the contributions of black scientists despite their vital contributions. Here, we want to celebrate their achievements and give them their rightful place in the history of marine science.

  • Promote inclusion: By emphasizing and sharing accomplishments, we can send a powerful message that their perspectives and voices are essential for the future of the field. The goal is to dismantle these unnecessary barriers and create a more inclusive scientific community.

  • Connecting the dots: Most importantly, the struggles of these black scientists are intertwined with other social justice issues. Black History Month allows a platform to discuss these connections and fight for solutions that benefit the scientific community and society.

Onto our Heroes

Dr. Mae Jemison

Dr. Mae Jemison

Our first stop on this journey lets us fly high, dive deep, and meet Dr. Mae Jemison. This woman had defied all odds, becoming the first black woman in space. But defying gravity was not enough for this scientist. Oh no, she had a love for the oceans, and that pulled her below the waterline. She uses her skills as a physician, engineer, and astronaut to develop new ideas and testing methods to further appreciate the interconnectedness of the earth's ecosystems. Her passion led her to create The Jemison Group, which focuses on advanced technologies and allows her to tackle marine science projects and problem-solve sustainability challenges. Talk about a person who knows how to make waves!

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson

Next, let's shout out to our conservation queen: now introducing her Majesty, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson! She's not just a marine biologist; she's practically a member of the royal guard for the ocean. She founded Ocean Collective, which is responsible for fighting the big fight against climate change and how it impacts our watery world. Here, she focuses on healthy oceans being vital for a healthy planet, what it looks like when we are thriving, and what will happen should we continue to do nothing. Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is also known for promoting inclusive solutions and creating discussions on the intersectionality of environmental issues with social justice, emphasizing the importance of having diverse voices and how they can shape conservation efforts. She is all about teamwork making the dream work!

Dr. Vernon Morris

Dr. Vernon Morris

We've discussed two powerful women; let's look at our gentleman of the sea, Dr. Vernon Morris. Through dedication and hard work, he cracked the Atlantic Ocean's code on how climate change is affecting it and how shifting currents and warming waters have had an impact on delicate ecosystems. That's not all he does; when Morris is not researching, he spends his time promoting diversified STEM fields and does this through hands-on mentorships, serving on committees, and passionately advocating for opportunities for underrepresented minorities, making sure he pays it forward. He has undoubtedly made a splash and paved the way for future black scientists!

Dr. Ashanti Johnson

Dr. Ashanti Johnson

Lastly, Dr. Ashanti Johnson, a marine geochemist who doesn't just unravel the ocean's mysteries but also spends time unraveling blockades for black scientists. Her contributions to the ocean and understanding of the chemical process have allowed valuable insight into the interactions of marine ecosystems. Her research goes all the way from the smallest microorganisms to the most significant ocean current. However, her passion for the ocean isn't the only thing she has focused on; she believes STEM is the future, and that is why she co-founded the Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success (MS Ph.D.) program. This allows support and mentorship to minority students in geosciences, expelling barriers and opening doors to careers. Her voice and actions enable future generations to be empowered and join the thrilling adventure that is scientific exploration.

These scientists have set the bar high and should be talked about and remembered. Their story is not simply about the past and what they have accomplished but also about having a brighter future. When we recognize and amplify their achievements, it creates a powerful message: we need the brilliance of EVERYONE. It is our honor to remember the legacy of these individuals, and we look forward to a more diverse and inclusive marine science community and DiveOne's role in supporting that. Thanks for taking the time to learn about these beautiful individuals, and remember, it's better to stand out than to fit in.
