Dive into Black Brilliance!

Did you know that there are Black scientists in marine science who have made extraordinary contributions, but their stories are often untold? It's black history month, and we sought to change that! In this blog, the black voices of marine science will be celebrated, and we aim to shine a spotlight on these ocean heroes.

Why Black History Month Matters in Science

While this company is focused on Marine science, we should all know how important it is to celebrate Black brilliance. Historically, this field has a severe lack of diversity, with African Americans only making up a shameful 3%, and this is because they have faced numerous barriers to entry and advancement. Black History Month allows us to:

  • Shine a spotlight on these deserving role models: Seeing them thrive in a field that lacks diversity is an inspiration to the next generation, breaking these limiting stereotypes and showing that they belong in these spaces.

  • It fixes the historical narrative: Unfortunately, it is too common to overlook the contributions of black scientists despite their vital contributions. Here, we want to celebrate their achievements and give them their rightful place in the history of marine science.

  • Promote inclusion: By emphasizing and sharing accomplishments, we can send a powerful message that their perspectives and voices are essential for the future of the field. The goal is to dismantle these unnecessary barriers and create a more inclusive scientific community.

  • Connecting the dots: Most importantly, the struggles of these black scientists are intertwined with other social justice issues. Black History Month allows a platform to discuss these connections and fight for solutions that benefit the scientific community and society.

Onto our Heroes

These scientists have set the bar high and should be talked about and remembered. Their story is not simply about the past and what they have accomplished but also about having a brighter future. When we recognize and amplify their achievements, it creates a powerful message: we need the brilliance of EVERYONE. It is our honor to remember the legacy of these individuals, and we look forward to a more diverse and inclusive marine science community and DiveOne's role in supporting that. Thanks for taking the time to learn about these beautiful individuals, and remember, it's better to stand out than to fit in.
